During his early years in Germany, when still answering to the name Bruno Reuter, Karunesh developed a strong engagement with music. A motorcycle accident at age 23 triggered a decisive shift toward new age spiritualism. He then traveled to India on a pilgrimage and adopted the name Karunesh, the Sanskrit term for compassion. His first album, Sounds of the Heart, appeared in 1984, after which he maintained an unbroken recording career. Over the following two decades he issued a steady sequence of releases that drew from the broad terrain of world music and featured airy flutes, reflective guitars, and subtle vocal and electronic elements. His work appeared on the Nightingale, Oreade, Etherean, and Real Music labels, among others. Standout titles include Heart Chakra Meditation from 1992, Secrets of Life, originally released in 1996, and Zen Breakfast in 2001, the last of which leaned into the new age subgenre of music for massage and relaxation.
