Stephen Rhodes

Stephen Rhodes, a music educator and artist specializing in relaxation music, entered the world in Birmingham before his family moved to Aldridge, England. From childhood he harbored a powerful drive toward a life as a working musician, convinced his path centered on creating recordings, shaping original works, and guiding others in the craft. In building his pieces he employs visualization, first forming a mental image of tranquil settings and then translating that scene into sound. Early in his professional life he took particular pleasure when listeners described envisioning imagery closely aligned with the scenes that had prompted his compositions.

A longtime instructor at Yamaha Music School, Rhodes has consistently viewed teaching as central to his work, seeing the encouragement of personal expression through music as a direct outgrowth of his dedication to improving well-being via sound. During the 1980s he established a connection with New World Music, the label known for issuing material devoted to mind-body-spirit wellness and relaxation recordings. His debut release for the company, Perfume, was conceived to foster a sense of calm assurance and quiet satisfaction. Subsequent projects, like that first album, gained wide followings among listeners seeking meditation and relaxation music around the globe.

Although many artists on the label draw primarily on audiences within Britain, Rhodes’s recordings regularly register on new age charts in multiple countries. Across a career exceeding two decades and encompassing nearly a dozen projects, he has remained a significant presence in therapeutic music.
