Robin Spielberg, a pianist from a family immersed in music, started taking piano lessons when she turned seven, and during her childhood years she also took up the organ and violin. Her higher education took place at both Michigan State University and New York University, where she devoted considerable time to the theater programs at each institution. Following her studies, she launched her professional performing career, frequently appearing at hotels throughout the New York region. These engagements soon provided opportunities for presenting her own musical works, which eventually led to opportunities in recording. In 1994 North Star Music offered her a recording contract, resulting in multiple releases throughout the remainder of that decade such as Heal of the Hand, Spirit of the Holidays, Unchained Melodies, In the Heart of Winter, and Songs of the Spirit.

The year 2000 saw her establish playMountain Music as her independent label, which she inaugurated with the album Beautiful Dreamer. During the initial four years under her own imprint she put out additional projects including Dreaming of Summer, The Christmas Collection, American Chanukah, and With a Song in My Heart. Extensive touring took her across both North and South America in addition to international destinations. Further releases from the 2000s encompass Memories of Utopia from 2005, A New Kind of Love issued in 2008, and the 2010 collection Sea to Shining Sea: A Tapestry of American Music. In 2013 her autobiographical work Naked on the Bench appeared in print.
