Biography
Chad Lawson's path as pianist and composer has crossed numerous stylistic territories, during which his personal idiom matured into a personal, emotionally direct language that reached the upper tiers of streaming and retail rankings throughout the 2010s and supplied underscoring for multiple television series and advertising campaigns. Early in 2020 he created the original podcast Calm It Down before entering an agreement with Decca that yielded the album You Finally Knew; momentum persisted with the double-album Breathe in 2022 and the tranquil Where We Are in 2024.
At five years old Lawson requested piano lessons after encountering Sha Na Na on television, instruction that took the standard classical route. Rather than attend the Peabody Conservatory he chose Berklee College of Music to concentrate on jazz and simultaneously accepted studio keyboard assignments. After graduation he toured with Babik Reinhardt, then assembled a jazz trio completed by bassist Zack Page and drummer Al Sergel. The ensemble's self-titled debut appeared in 1997; two further Summit releases, Dear Dorothy: The Oz Sessions in 2002 and Unforeseen in 2004, both registered strongly on jazz charts. The Oz Sessions recording placed Lawson's work on Dawson's Creek and inside Starbucks outlets while also leading to his scoring the 2007 film Doughboys directed by Louis Lombardi. Trio activity paused that year when he joined Julio Iglesias as keyboardist on tour.
Windham Hill founder William Ackerman, having noticed Lawson's writing, assisted with the 2009 launch of the first solo album, Set on a Hill. That project signaled a lasting change of direction; five additional solo recordings followed between 2011 and 2014, each attracting editorial attention. Lawson's solo catalog maintains a calm, contemplative character that merges classical sonorities with the open structures of jazz improvisation. The Space Between, released in 2013, heightened that intimacy through the insertion of felt between hammers and strings together with close microphone placement at the hammers. The identical preparation was used for the 2014 chart-topping The Chopin Variations, which reworked melodies of the Romantic composer and featured violinist Judy Kang and cellist Rubin Kodheli. Bach Interpreted appeared as a solo album in 2016, accompanied by scores for the podcast and Amazon series Lore, confirming the judgment already formed by producers of The Walking Dead and Viceland as well as agencies for Chevrolet, IBM, and additional clients that his music readily supplied atmospheric tone. In 2018 Lawson self-released re:Piano, routing the instrument through iPad processing in the same manner employed for concert live looping, again reaching leading positions on streaming and sales lists. Music written for the first two seasons of the podcast Unobscured was issued in 2019; the following year he introduced his independent podcast Calm It Down. Also in 2020 the Stay EP and the full-length You Finally Knew became his first Decca releases. Supported by major-label infrastructure, output remained consistent through a holiday EP, assorted singles and compilations, and the 2022 double-album Breathe. Recorded, like its predecessor, at London's Abbey Road Studio, Breathe incorporated the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra along with violinist Esther Yoo and cellist Peter Gregson. Among several shorter projects issued in the ensuing years was the 2024 full-length Where We Are, an eleven-track soothing collection conceived as relief from everyday turbulence. Later that year he issued the brief holiday EP Christmas Time Is Here, presenting several of Vince Guaraldi's classic seasonal pieces.
