James Heather, a pianist residing in London, shapes introspective pieces drenched in reverberation whose architecture and atmosphere draw from electronic music alongside post-rock. Global headlines fuel his output, as heard on the 2017 debut Stories from Far Away on Piano that registered on Billboard, while personal bereavement and philosophical introspection surface on later works such as Modulations: EP2, issued in 2021. Longstanding ties to electronic circles encompass an enduring affiliation with Coldcut’s Ninja Tune imprint plus joint projects involving Dawn Richard and the Cinematic Orchestra.

Heather spent his early years in Southampton, England, where grandparents from both sides of the family introduced him to inventive piano methods. He began writing music independently at age eleven, absorbing influence from Beethoven and Debussy as well as an acid house pirate radio station and regional jazz ensembles. Employment at Ninja Tune started in 2003, followed by promotional work on behalf of Actress, Thundercat, Bonobo, and the label’s founders Coldcut. After relocating to London, a near-fatal traffic accident inflicted permanent damage to one finger. During rehabilitation he approached his music with renewed focus, allowing personal sentiments to shape the material more directly. On Coldcut’s reactivated Ahead of Our Time label he issued Modulations: EP1 in 2017, assembled across disparate sessions and emotional conditions. The follow-up Stories from Far Away on Piano formed a single conceptual statement rooted in assorted news reports and reached number 14 on Billboard’s Classical Crossover chart.

Live appearances encompassed Glastonbury and Wilderness. He wrote a score for Iskra Strings, who supported his sold-out headline concert at London’s St Pancras Old Church. Piano appears on Dawn Richard and Mumdance’s 2018 single “Guardian Angel.” Later that year Reworks arrived, containing string-quartet adaptations arranged by Heather himself together with versions by Mary Lattimore, Sarah Davachi, Chihei Hatakeyama, and further contributors. His contribution to the Cinematic Orchestra’s 2020 release To Believe (Remixes) reimagined “A Caged Bird/Imitations of Life.” In 2021 he released Modulations: EP2, five pieces originating in live improvisation and committed to tape in single takes.
