Biography
Composer and multi-instrumentalist Bill Douglas draws upon extensive academic training and stage experience in both jazz and classical traditions to shape his performances and original works with seasoned ingenuity. His earliest professional steps took place in Canada as a teenager immersed in rock and jazz, beginning with Elvis covers delivered by his debut ensemble. He later earned formal degrees in music from the University of Toronto and Yale University, the latter under the guidance of avant-garde composer Mel Powell.
At Yale he formed a lasting partnership with clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, resulting in joint tours and recordings where Douglas supplied piano and bassoon support across classical and jazz idioms. He also shared stages with jazz figures such as Eddie Gomez and Gary Burton while serving as bassoonist for the Toronto Symphony.
A seven-year residency at the California Academy of Arts allowed him to refine his pedagogical and creative methods before he relocated to Boulder, Colorado, where he instructs courses in music history and technique at the Naropa Institute. There he created “Rock Etudes,” a rhythm-training curriculum now adopted by music educators internationally.
Summers are reserved for composition, an activity in which his accumulated influences converge into unified, lyrical statements. The resulting recordings—Jewel Lake, Cantilena, Deep Peace, Earth Prayer, and 2000’s Eternity’s Sunrise—illustrate the breadth of his artistic range.
