Biography
Academy Award-nominated American film composer Alan Silvestri built much of his reputation on a long-running creative alliance with director Robert Zemeckis. Their partnership began with the 1984 adventure Romancing the Stone and continued through numerous major releases, among them the 1994 drama Forrest Gump and the 2004 animated feature The Polar Express. The latter brought Silvestri an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for the track “Believe.” Additional prominent assignments include several installments of Marvel’s The Avengers series, notably Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011 as well as Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War in 2018 and Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Silvestri has sustained his association with Zemeckis, providing music for the director’s 2022 Disney remake of Pinocchio and the 2024 drama Here. He also rejoined the Russo brothers for their 2025 non-Marvel science-fiction film The Electric State.
Silvestri explored various instruments during his upbringing in Teaneck, New Jersey, and by age fifteen he was already contemplating a future in music. He studied guitar at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, yet after two years the department head informed him of an opening with Wayne Cochran & the C.C. Riders and encouraged him to take it. Silvestri accepted, though he soon realized touring life did not suit him. When a subsequent arranging opportunity collapsed, he found himself stuck in Los Angeles. Still in his early twenties, he secured his initial film assignment after meeting Oscar-nominated lyricist Bradford Craig, who helped him land the score for the modest 1972 release The Doberman Gang. That credit led to further low-budget pictures until steady employment arrived in 1977 with the television series ChiPs. Following the program’s cancellation, a lean period ensued until Silvestri connected with Zemeckis on Romancing the Stone, the 1984 project that proved pivotal for everyone involved.
In subsequent years Silvestri and Zemeckis collaborated on numerous successful films, including Back to the Future in 1985, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in 1988, and the Best Picture recipient Forrest Gump in 1994. Meanwhile, other scoring duties encompassed Predator in 1987, The Abyss in 1989, The Bodyguard in 1992, and The Quick and the Dead in 1995. That same year Varèse Sarabande issued the compilation Voyages: The Film Music Journeys of Alan Silvestri. Continuing demand kept Silvestri active on projects such as Zemeckis’s Cast Away in 2000 and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch in 2002, before he earned an Oscar nomination and a Grammy for the song “Believe,” co-written with Glen Ballard, from The Polar Express in 2004.
Silvestri rejoined Zemeckis for the 2007 film Beowulf and delivered his first Marvel Studios score, Captain America: The First Avenger, in 2011, returning the next year for The Avengers. Further 2010s highlights include Emmy recognition for the 2014 series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey plus additional Zemeckis films: the 2015 biopic The Walk about high-wire artist Philippe Petit and the 2016 thriller Allied starring Brad Pitt. Scores for Zemeckis’s Welcome to Marwen, Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War all appeared in 2018. Avengers: Endgame, released in 2019, earned Silvestri a 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. Subsequent assignments included Roald Dahl’s The Witches and the live-action musical Pinocchio, both directed by Zemeckis, with Silvestri again partnering with Ballard on four original songs for the latter. Another Zemeckis collaboration arrived with the 2024 family drama Here, after which Silvestri once more teamed with directors Anthony and Joe Russo on the 2025 science-fiction action film The Electric State.
