Patrick Doyle

Scottish composer Patrick Doyle, who steps into acting on rarer occasions, has earned widespread recognition for his orchestral scores composed for screen versions of classic literature, many of them realized under the guidance of Kenneth Branagh in his dual capacity as performer and director.

A graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Doyle entered the world of feature films by supplying the music for Branagh’s 1989 adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry V. Their partnership resumed swiftly on projects such as the 1991 suspense thriller Dead Again, the 1993 comedy Much Ado About Nothing, and the 1994 gothic drama Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. During the same period Doyle also scored the 1992 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar recipient Indochine, the 1993 crime saga Carlito’s Way, and Alfonso Cuarón’s 1995 family favorite A Little Princess. His contributions to Emma Thompson’s 1995 screen rendering of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility brought Doyle his initial Academy Award nomination, followed the next year by a second nomination for Branagh’s expansive four-hour film of Hamlet.

The pair resumed their collaboration throughout the 2000s on the Shakespearean musical Love’s Labour’s Lost, the comedy As You Like It, and the 2007 non-Shakespearean Sleuth, whose source was an Anthony Shaffer play adapted for the screen by Harold Pinter under Branagh’s direction. Additional notable assignments from that decade encompassed Bridget Jones’ Diary, Gosford Park, and the fourth entry in the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Reuniting with Branagh in the following decade, Doyle composed the score for the 2011 Marvel Cinematic Universe entry Thor. His music appeared the subsequent year in the Disney/Pixar animated feature Brave. Further joint ventures with Branagh comprised a National Theatre live television presentation of Macbeth as well as two 2015 releases: Walt Disney’s Cinderella and a cinematic adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale that reached theaters worldwide via live satellite broadcast and led the United Kingdom box office on its opening day. In the same calendar year Doyle issued the solo-piano album The Music of Patrick Doyle: Solo Piano, containing fresh recordings of his own film themes.

More than twenty-five years into their professional relationship, the duo next tackled the 2017 screen version of Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel Murder on the Orient Express. That year also found Doyle scoring the computer-animated comedy The Emoji Movie. To conclude the decade he reunited once more with Branagh for a trio of films: the 2018 drama All Is True, which reimagines the later life of Henry VIII, the 2020 adaptation of the young-adult series Artemis Fowl, and the sequel Death on the Nile.
