Biography
Renowned for his enduring partnership with director Federico Fellini, Nino Rota ranked among the era’s most productive and honored composers of film music, contributing scores to projects that stretched from La Dolce Vita in 1960 through Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet in 1968 to Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather in 1972.
Rota entered the world on December 3, 1911, in Milan, Italy, already displaying prodigious talent by completing both an opera and an oratorio before turning fifteen. He pursued further training at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and at the Liceo Musicale in Bari, where he later held the post of director between 1950 and 1978. His entry into the Italian cinema came in 1933, when he began writing music for the period’s characteristic “white telephone” romances and musical comedies. By the close of the 1940s he had supplied scores for roughly thirty features in addition to the operas Torquemada and The Florentine Straw Hat.
The 1952 release of Lo Sceicco Bianco marked Rota’s initial collaboration with Fellini. Over the next three decades their alliance produced some of the most celebrated director-composer pairings in motion-picture history, yielding such landmarks as La Strada in 1954 (which Rota later reworked as a ballet), 8 1/2 in 1963, Amarcord in 1974, and the aforementioned La Dolce Vita. The visibility gained through these films opened doors to other prominent directors, among them Luchino Visconti for Rocco E I Suoi Fratelli in 1960, King Vidor for War and Peace in 1956, and Mario Monicelli for La Grande Guerra in 1959. In 1968 Rota composed the music for Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet, whose central love theme quickly became one of his best-known pieces; still more memorable was the main theme he created for Coppola’s The Godfather in 1972. For his work on The Godfather Part II in 1974, Rota received an Academy Award. He passed away in Rome on April 10, 1979.
