Formed as a New Zealand alternative rock trio, Evermore consisted of the three Hume brothers—singer and guitarist Jon, bassist and keyboardist Peter, and drummer Dann. Raised on their parents’ vinyl collection, with the group’s name drawn from Led Zeppelin’s classic ballad “The Battle of Evermore,” the Fielding-born siblings performed together during their teenage years and first joined forces as Evermore in 1999. The following year they won the top prize at the annual Kiwi high-school band contest Rock Quest, using the winnings to establish their own facility, Red Sky Studio. Although the band manufactured just 300 copies of the 2002 single “Slipping Away,” the track received consistent rotation on Australia’s influential Triple J radio network, which in turn sponsored Evermore’s inaugural Aussie tour in 2003 behind the EP Oil and Water. Later that year the trio returned with the follow-up EP My Own Way and joined U.S. rock outfit Brad on the road. After floodwaters compelled them to abandon Red Sky Studio, the group tracked their 2004 debut album Dreams in Seattle under producer Barrett Jones. Both “It’s Too Late” and “For One Day” reached the Australian Top 20, and following their appearance as support on New Zealand pop legends Split Enz’s 2006 reunion tour, Evermore released their second LP, Real Life.
