David Kosten operates under the Faultline alias, delivering his distinctive drum'n'bass breakbeats from a North London base as a U.K. electronic DJ. From childhood, exposure to diverse musical forms came through his practice of clarinet and piano, though a professional path in the field only gained serious consideration in 1996 upon his introduction to One Little Indian. Influences drawn from synth pop and darkwave acts including Talk Talk, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Teardrop Explodes, and Brian Eno further refined his electronic production techniques, encompassing varied instrumentals alongside intricate programming, while fostering a drive to create a full-length record. Limited prospects with One Little Indian meant insufficient promotion for the debut album Closer Colder, prompting Kosten to seek support through Tony Morley's Leaf label instead. The initial Faultline release of Closer Colder arrived during autumn 1999. A 2002 project titled Your Love Means Everything emerged from partnerships with the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, blending vocal and instrumental elements equally.
