Biography
Ferdinando Carulli, an Italian guitarist and composer, built his principal career and reputation while working in Paris. Having started out on the cello, he transferred his established notation methods to the six-string guitar during the years when that instrument first rose to wider acceptance. In that setting he stood as the foremost guitarist in Paris, if not farther afield, and counted Carcassi and Sor among his contemporaries, although Sor ultimately attained higher standing than either of the other two. Carulli produced a large body of pieces—sonatas, studies, and variations—most of which remain in active use and can still be found in virtually any music store or institution.
