An Italian-born virtuoso on the guitar, this musician also commanded the concertina and melophone. Lyons served as the setting for his upbringing, though childhood appearances on guitar in Paris and London quickly earned widespread acclaim. After the family made London its permanent base, he encountered other masters of the instrument along with several music publishers. At the urging of the Polish authority Sokolowski he took up the eight-string guitar, featuring the instrument during concert tours that carried him through Vienna, Prague, and Leipzig between 1840 and 1841. His output encompassed the guitar works “Reverie nocturne,” opus 19, and “Fete villageoise,” opus 20, as well as “Introduction and Variations on an Austrian Air,” opus 1, composed for concertina and piano.
