Biography
Formed by bassist Jimmy "Flim" Johnson, keyboardist Billy Barber, percussionist Billy Berg, and reeds player Dick Oatts, Flim & the BB's ranked among the leading fusion and light jazz ensembles that surfaced in the 1980s. Their first release, the 1982 album Tricycle, showcased a fusion approach perfectly matched to the rising popularity of compact discs, as the group ranked among the earliest acts to employ digital recording methods; subsequent releases such as Big Notes in 1985 and Neon in 1987 attracted listeners from both the contemporary jazz audience and technology enthusiasts. The quartet left the independent DMP label for Warner Bros. following the 1988 album Further Adventures, issuing their first major-label project, New Pants, the next year. This Is a Recording from 1992 marked the end of their recorded output.
