Fusing Irish folk melodies with punk's rapid pacing and electric guitars, the Los Angeles ensemble Flogging Molly carved a distinctive niche in contemporary Celtic rock. Fronted by vocalist and guitarist Dave King, the group channels folk subtleties within its forceful approach, balancing lyrics about rowdy escapades with reflective accounts of affection, allegiance, and bygone eras. Their breakthrough arrived via the 2002 release Drunken Lullabies, which shaped their signature style, while subsequent projects alternated between acoustic and concert recordings on Whiskey on a Sunday in 2006, addressed adversity on Speed of Darkness in 2011, and delivered a comparatively introspective yet intense set with Anthem in 2022.

Dublin-born Dave King, previously guitarist and frontman of Fastway, assembled the lineup in 1994 alongside fiddler Bridget Regan, guitarist Dennis Casey, accordionist and one-time professional skateboarder Matt Hensley, bassist Nathen Maxwell, drummer George Schwindt, and mandolinist Bob Schmidt. Early residencies at the Los Angeles venue Molly Malones led to extensive touring, where the septet's intense performances formed the core of their identity and sustained global road work across their career. Their boisterous folk-rock punk approach drew parallels to fellow Irish acts the Pogues, Black 47, and the Dropkick Murphys, yet the group maintained an independent edge that resisted strict categorization.

Flogging Molly issued their first album, Swagger, in March 2000 through Side One Dummy, with Drunken Lullabies arriving two years later. King drew on personal history—including his upbringing amid conflict in Ireland, his father's early passing, and an eight-year period in the United States—for the lyrics of these energetic tavern anthems. Within a Mile of Home reached stores in September 2004 as relentless touring continued. The July 2006 documentary DVD Whiskey on a Sunday offered an unfiltered view of the band members collectively and individually, bundled with a ten-track acoustic and live disc. Early in 2007 Hensley stepped away on amicable terms to prioritize family before the March release of the Complete Control Sessions EP.

Float, the fourth studio album, appeared in 2008 after Hensley's return, followed by documentation of their shows on Live at the Greek Theatre in 2010. Producer Ryan Hewitt joined for Speed of Darkness in 2011, which featured new drummer Mike Alonso—formerly of Bantam Rooster and Electric Six, and a prior collaborator with King in Katmandu—replacing original percussionist Schwindt. Continued touring included curation of the annual Salty Dog Cruise departing each St. Patrick's Day. The sixth album, Life Is Good, emerged in early 2017 after recording sessions in Dublin. Five years later came Anthem, tracked with engineer Steve Albini—who had also handled Swagger and Drunken Lullabies—and featuring new banjo and mandolin player Spencer Swain.
