The Real McKenzies approach Scottish folk music in much the same way the Pogues once transformed Ireland’s traditional repertoire, accelerating the tempos and amplifying the energy until the results edge close to punk rock without sacrificing the underlying melodies. Bagpipes and acoustic guitars occasionally surface to underscore a folk-rooted character, while the words chronicle both the triumphs and hardships of Scottish history alongside the band’s openly celebrated enthusiasm for alcohol. Founded in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1992, the group originated as the vision of vocalist and songwriter Paul McKenzie, its sole uninterrupted member across more than two decades. During that span, roughly one hundred musicians cycled through the lineup; McKenzie explained the pattern to journalist Nicole Veerman in 2013 with the observation, “I keep having to get younger people because they’re the only ones that are good at putting up with this rock & roll lifestyle, and then they last a few years, they get older and I have to find someone else young again.” The band’s rigorous touring regimen, often consuming as much as eight months annually, began with club dates across Canada shortly after formation and led to the 1995 release of a self-titled debut on IFA Records. Their follow-up, Clash of the Tartans, arrived in 1998 via Sudden Death Records, the imprint established by Joe Keithley, better known as Joey Shithead of the Canadian punk institution D.O.A.

American punk imprint Honest Don’s Records issued Loch’d & Loaded in 2001 and Oot & Aboot in 2003. A live document of their unrestrained stage energy, Pissed Tae Th’ Gills: A Drunken Live Tribute to Robbie Burns, appeared in both audio and video editions in 2002. With 10,000 Shots in 2005 the group moved to Fat Wreck Chords, the California punk label that had previously distributed Honest Don’s titles; four further albums emerged on Fat between 2008 and 2015, including the 2015 set Rats in the Burlap, produced by label head “Fat Mike” Burkett of NOFX. Persistent road work and a steady recording output cultivated a substantial audience, enabling shared bills with fellow Celtic-punk outfits such as Flogging Molly, the Dropkick Murphys, and Shane MacGowan, as well as punk and metal acts including Metallica, the Misfits, Rancid, and Voodoo Glow Skulls.
