Celtic Thunder emerged in 2008 as a multi-generational Irish vocal ensemble and theatrical production that fuses longstanding folk traditions with contemporary textures. Over the ensuing years the group has issued dozens of platinum-certified albums and videos, among them Heritage in 2011, Voyage in 2012, and Homeland in 2021. While rooted in Celtic material, the ensemble has also branched into Broadway repertoire, mainstream pop and rock selections, and holiday standards.

Sharon Browne originated the concept, which Phil Coulter shaped through his writing and arrangements as a modern lens on Celtic music. The production was mounted, recorded, and filmed in Dublin during August 2008, presenting five male vocalists—Damian McGinty, then only 14 years old, alongside Keith Harkin, Paul Byrom, Ryan Kelly, and George Donaldson—who traded leads across traditional numbers and newer pieces, several composed by Coulter. Decca released the resulting album and video later that same year.

The 2009 follow-up, Take Me Home, mixed classic Irish and Scottish ballads with a few pop and rock covers, whereas 2010’s It’s Entertainment confined itself entirely to commercial pop successes. Celtic Thunder revisited its heritage with the 2011 album Heritage, which blended new and longstanding songs; Paul Byrom contributed numerous tracks before departing and was succeeded by Emmet Cahill, though both singers appear on the finished recording. Storm, a fully staged theatrical work, appeared that year, followed by the platinum-selling Voyage and Voyage II in 2012 and the ensemble’s tenth album, Mythology, in 2013.

Vocalist George Donaldson died of a heart attack at his home in Glasgow, Scotland, in March 2014. Legacy, Vol. 1 surfaced in 2016, reuniting Colm Keegan, Keith Harkin, Ryan Kelly, Emmett O’Hanlon, and Neil Byrne with guest artist Damian McGinty, the Glee! star, for a live celebration of Irish and Celtic music’s worldwide influence. Legacy, Vol. 2, featuring the same lineup and spotlighting hits and fan favorites, followed in August. Early in 2017 the group issued Emmet Cahill’s Ireland, a set of Irish standards performed by Cahill. Months later Inspirational appeared, presenting renditions of popular Christian songs associated with Elvis Presley, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, and Alison Krauss. X arrived in 2018 to mark ten years of activity, offering a lively program of Irish songs, classic hits, love songs, and retro pop numbers, while Homeland in 2021 returned to the ensemble’s most popular Irish and Celtic material from the preceding decade.
