An all-female collective blending Celtic traditions with new age textures and adult contemporary polish, Celtic Woman drew early comparisons to Clannad, Enya, and Loreena McKennitt. The ensemble first attracted widespread attention through a high-energy stage production whose spirit echoed Riverdance, a connection reinforced by music director David Downes, who spearheaded the project’s launch in 2004. PBS captured the debut performance that same year and aired it in 2005, pairing the broadcast with a surprise hit album and video. Although conceived as a one-time release, the recording ascended to the summit of the Billboard World Albums chart, where it remained for a record 81 weeks and paved the way for later chart-topping efforts such as Songs from the Heart (2010), Destiny (2015), and Postcards from Ireland (2021).

Extensive touring followed, with the members sometimes spending as many as 35 weeks annually on the road. A string of PBS specials kept the performers visible on American television, while fresh recordings sustained their chart presence. The holiday collection A Christmas Celebration surfaced in 2006, succeeded in 2007 by A New Journey; both reached the top of the World Albums chart, and A New Journey crossed over to peak at number four on the Billboard 200. The Greatest Journey arrived in 2008, mixing earlier material with new tracks, and two years later Songs from the Heart incorporated contemporary covers into the group’s established sound.

A defining trait has been the ensemble’s revolving roster, which has spotlighted Chloë Agnew, Máiréad Nesbitt, Lynn Hilary, Órla Fallon, and Méav Ní Mhaolchatha at different times. In 2011 Celtic Woman issued the aptly named Lullaby, a set of tranquil selections featuring interpretations of “Over the Rainbow,” “When You Wish Upon a Star,” and the traditional “Hush Little Baby.” Lisa Lambe joined for the 2012 album Believe and remained for Emerald: Musical Gems in 2014 before departing to pursue solo endeavors. Destiny, released in 2015, introduced newest members Máiréad Carlin and Éabha McMahon and debuted at number one on the World Albums chart. Voices of Angels followed in 2016, again showcasing Carlin and McMahon alongside Susan McFadden, fiddler Tara McNeill, and returning guest Méav Ní Mhaolchatha; it marked the ensemble’s tenth straight number-one debut on the World Albums chart. After the 2017 holiday compilation The Best of Christmas, the live CD/DVD Homecoming: Live from Ireland appeared in January 2018, recorded in Dublin during the Voices of Angels tour.

Ancient Land, the thirteenth studio album, arrived in 2019 and marked the debut of vocalist Megan Walsh, who had joined the previous year. That same year brought the seasonal release Magic of Christmas. Postcards from Ireland, issued in 2021, featured vocalists Chloë Agnew, Megan Walsh, and Muirgen O'Mahony together with instrumentalist Tara McNeill and guest contributions from British folk group the Longest Johns. In 2023 the ensemble marked its twentieth anniversary with a concert at The Helix in Dublin that included special appearances by founding members Chloë Agnew, Lisa Kelly, Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, and Máiréad Nesbitt. The concert recording, titled 20, followed the next year.
