Hayley Westenra entered the world in 1987 in New Zealand. Her classical education encompasses both vocal performance and dance, and she previously belonged to the New Zealand Royal Ballet. An operatic timbre defines her singing, which she has showcased alongside the New Zealand Opera and Orchestra. At fourteen years old, she launched her recording career with a debut album bearing her name, captivating audiences throughout her homeland. Universal International followed with Pure, blending pop, classical, and sacred material in an eclectic and engaging manner that resonated worldwide. Her approach to popular songs stands apart from typical classical vocalists due to the absence of vibrato; instead, her tone remains pure and resonant, allowing notes to emerge and sustain with natural ease.

Although reviewers have drawn parallels to Charlotte Church, Westenra’s interpretive style aligns more closely with figures like Kate Bush—whose “Wuthering Heights” served as the lead single from Pure—and Barbra Streisand. Following Pure’s tremendous acclaim, she relocated to London alongside her family and embarked on extensive global tours to promote the record. Appearances at the British Classical Awards solidified her standing in the United Kingdom. The United States received Pure in April 2004, with the accompanying video for “Wuthering Heights” receiving significant airplay on VH1 after strong shows in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. That June, Universal put out My Gift to You, featuring Christmas and seasonal tracks.

Her next international release, Odyssey, came out in September 2005 and incorporated folk ballads alongside numerous pop-focused pieces. In 2007, Treasure presented a personal selection of Irish and Maori folk songs, with the 2008 compilation River of Dreams: The Very Best of Hayley Westenra arriving thereafter. Winter Magic, centered on holiday themes, emerged in 2009. Paradiso marked her return in 2011 as the fifth international studio album, developed in partnership with Ennio Morricone and including compositions he created specifically for her. The sixth studio effort, Hushabye, arrived in 2013 as an anthology of traditional children’s lullabies.
