Biography
Emerging during the 2012 run of Britain's Got Talent, vocalist Charlotte Jaconelli issued a pair of U.K. Top Five albums alongside Jonathan Antoine in the duo Jonathan & Charlotte, after which the two pursued separate paths as solo artists. She entered the world on August 24, 1995, in Chigwell, Essex, where her mother first sparked an interest in singing by placing her in stage-school lessons at age four. Her high-school vocal instructor later introduced her to Antoine. At the time of their Britain's Got Talent audition, Jaconelli was enrolled in a musical-theater program at London's Arts Educational Schools, while Antoine studied classical singing at the Royal Academy.
The combination struck many observers as mismatched, given Antoine's commanding, theatrical tenor—ideal for operatic repertoire—and Jaconelli's smooth, lyrical delivery, which aligned more naturally with West End standards. Simon Cowell shared this view and urged Antoine to part ways with his "less talented" collaborator. The singers nevertheless remained united, finishing second in the competition and securing a £1 million contract with Cowell's Syco imprint. Their debut release, Together, leaned heavily on Antoine's strengths through a conventional classical-crossover approach that included numerous "popera" renditions of familiar pop songs. The follow-up, Perhaps Love, took a more eclectic turn by blending pop, classical, and musical-theater selections.
Discussions for a third project ended when the pair parted on amicable terms due to differing musical priorities. Sony extended solo contracts to both artists, and each agreed to continue with the label. Jaconelli's first album under her own name, Solitaire, appeared in 2014.
