Biography
An English tenor celebrated for his interpretations of both contemporary pop numbers and operatic standards, Russell Watson earned the moniker “the People’s Tenor” through years of performing in pubs and working-men’s clubs. Encouraged by an admirer who recognized the expressive power and breadth of his voice, he began incorporating opera arias into his sets. One such suggestion led him to learn Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma,” which soon became a regular part of his performances. The exposure eventually brought him to the attention of Decca Records, and the label issued his debut, The Voice, in 2000. Largely recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the album featured his renditions of “Nessun Dorma,” Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and the Freddie Mercury–Montserrat Caballé collaboration “Barcelona.” It climbed to number five on the U.K. album chart, reached the Top Ten in Australia, and topped Billboard’s classical albums chart in the United States.
From that point forward Watson maintained a steady presence on the British album listings, weaving classical selections together with rock-era anthems, Broadway material, and classic pop. His fifth studio release, the 2007 album That’s Life, leaned toward traditional and current pop songs, while 2010’s La Voce concentrated on Italian-language arias and songs. He remained with Decca for his fourth LP, Amore Musica, issued in 2004, after having delivered Encore in 2001 and Reprise the following year; the latter set juxtaposed Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” with Bizet’s “Au Fond du Temple Saint” from The Pearl Fishers. A brain-tumor diagnosis and subsequent surgery postponed his next project, yet he re-emerged in 2007 with That’s Life in March and Outside In that November. By the time the latter appeared, he had endured a second emergency procedure to address a related growth. Recommitting to his career in 2008 with renewed perspective, Watson recorded the seventh studio album, People Get Ready, which proved to be his final Decca release.
Signing with Sony in 2010, he explored classical composers—though not exclusively—on La Voce, captured with the Roma Sinfonietta. Inspired by the London Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, he issued the patriotic collection Anthems: Music to Inspire a Nation in 2012. Only One Man followed in 2013, supported by a nationwide tour alongside the Arts Symphonic Orchestra, marking his tenth consecutive U.K. Top 20 entry. His eleventh album, True Stories, surfaced in 2016 and peaked at number 30. For his twelfth studio project Watson teamed with Welsh singer, radio host, and television presenter Aled Jones, whose own vocal career had begun in childhood during the 1980s. Released by BMG, In Harmony entered the U.K. album chart at number eight in 2018. A companion set, Back in Harmony, arrived in November 2019. The next year Watson joined the cast of the reality survival series I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here and commemorated the twentieth anniversary of his debut with the aptly titled 20, a collection of re-recorded hits that reached number ten on the Billboard 200. In 2022 he reunited with Jones for the Christmas covers album Christmas with Aled and Russell.
