Biography
After first gaining notice late last century through a collaboration with Luciano Pavarotti, Italian vocalist Andrea Bocelli secured lasting global fame across classical and pop realms, acquiring the nickname “the fourth tenor.” His supple timbre shifts fluidly from commanding operatic arias to intimate pop ballads, allowing every release since the 1994 debut Il Mare Calmo Della Sera to register on charts in numerous territories. Frequently cited as his fourth album, the 1997 pop anthology Romanza propelled his breakthrough in the U.K. and U.S. while reaching the summit in more than a dozen nations. He subsequently joined forces with leading pop figures such as Céline Dion and Ed Sheeran alongside classical luminaries including Placido Domingo and Cecilia Bartoli, sustaining international chart presence through classical, pop, and complete opera projects. The 2009 seasonal collection My Christmas ascended to number one in Italy and surpassed three million copies sold in the U.S. alone. Cinema, an anthology of celebrated film themes, brought his fourth Grammy nomination in 2017. Though prior efforts had approached the summit, Si became his initial Billboard 200 chart-topper in 2018, incorporating partnerships with Sheeran and Josh Groban plus additional guests. Late 2022 found him entering the studio alongside offspring Matteo and Virginia Bocelli for A Family Christmas, after which he marked more than three decades in music by revisiting his signature track “Vivo por Ella” as a 2024 duet with KAROL G.
Bocelli was raised on a farm in the Tuscan hamlet of Lajatico. Piano instruction began at age six, soon followed by flute and saxophone studies. Congenital glaucoma already impaired his vision, and a soccer mishap at twelve left him fully blind. He nevertheless pursued singing, later attending the University of Pisa to obtain a doctorate in law. A short legal career financed vocal coaching from renowned tenor Franco Corelli, while engagements in piano bars covered remaining expenses.
His initial opportunity arrived in 1992 when Italian rock artist Zucchero Fornaciari sought tenors to demo “Miserere,” a piece co-authored with U2’s Bono. Bocelli passed the audition and laid down the track alongside Pavarotti, forging a lasting friendship. Following 1993 dates with Fornaciari, he appeared as a featured performer at the Pavarotti International Festival in Modena that September. November 1995 brought a multi-country trek across Holland, Belgium, Germany, Spain, and France as part of the Night of the Proms series, sharing bills with Al Jarreau, Bryan Ferry, Supertramp’s Roger Hodgson, and John Miles, while his solo path toward classical-crossover prominence was already underway.
The opening pair of releases, 1994’s Il Mare Calmo Della Sera and 1995’s Bocelli, emphasized operatic repertoire, whereas the third outing, Viaggio Italiano, spotlighted celebrated arias and Neapolitan traditional pieces. The 1997 compilation Romanza, drawn from his first two pop sets, elevated him to superstardom; the multi-platinum package contained the worldwide smash “Time to Say Goodbye,” a duet with Sarah Brightman. Pop ballad emphasis continued on 1999’s Sogno, which paired him with Céline Dion for “The Prayer.” That album exceeded ten million copies globally, earned a Golden Globe, and secured Bocelli’s Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. A set of seasonal arias appeared the same year, succeeded by Verdi in 2000.
Tribute to his Tuscan heritage arrived via 2001’s Cieli di Toscana, while the well-received Andrea sustained his worldwide visibility in 2004. Two projects surfaced in 2006: Amore, which climbed to number three on the Billboard 200, and the concert CD/DVD Under the Desert Sky. Incanto, a gathering of Neapolitan love songs, followed in 2008, then the holiday album My Christmas in 2009. The latter marked his first Italian number one and reached number two in both the U.S. and Canada.
Notte Illuminata appeared and toured throughout 2010; February 2011 brought his Metropolitan Opera House debut in New York. That September he performed in Central Park alongside the New York Philharmonic and guests Tony Bennett, Céline Dion, Chris Botti, and Bryn Terfel, an event preserved as Concerto: One Night in Central Park.
Passione, his fourteenth studio album, arrived in 2013 with several duets, among them contributions from Jennifer Lopez, Nelly Furtado, and trumpeter Chris Botti. A matching live CD/DVD, Love in Portofino, surfaced later that year, drawn from an August 2012 concert on the Piazzetta in Portofino, Italy, and granted a limited theatrical release.
Cinema returned in 2015, offering newly arranged versions of iconic motion-picture songs drawn from Gladiator, The Godfather, Evita, and additional scores. Verve simultaneously issued Andrea Bocelli: The Complete Pop Albums. A duet rendering of Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect,” titled “Perfect Symphony,” surfaced in 2017, while Decca compiled the seven-disc Andrea Bocelli: The Complete Classical Albums for 2018 release.
Also in 2018, Bocelli delivered his sixteenth studio album, Si, which topped charts in both the U.K. and U.S. Featuring pairings with Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Josh Groban, Aida Garifullina, and son Matteo Bocelli, the set later received a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. The inspirational collection Believe, containing a duet version of “Amazing Grace” with Alison Krauss, followed in November 2020.
Two years afterward came A Family Christmas, a project uniting him with youngest children Virginia, then ten, and Matteo, then twenty-four. Produced by Stephan Moccio, whose credits include work with Céline Dion and Barbra Streisand, the album blended two original compositions with holiday standards and a reading of “Over the Rainbow,” ultimately peaking at number twenty-two on the Billboard 200. In August 2024 Bocelli commemorated three decades in music by releasing a duet edition of his 1997 song “Vivo por Ella” with KAROL G.
