Greek tenor Mario Frangoulis first built a devoted domestic audience before aligning with Sony Classical to broaden his appeal worldwide. Born in Rhodesia, the south-central African territory later known as Zimbabwe, he relocated to Greece at the age of four. His aunt raised him there until he departed at seventeen for acting studies at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. While enrolled, he appeared in West End productions including Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera, gradually shifting his focus toward operatic singing. He next spent three years at New York's Julliard School of Music and trained under the legendary tenor Alfredo Kraus. After completing his studies, Frangoulis took on a wide array of stage, film, and television roles, ranging from Greek tragedies to works by Shakespeare. He launched his recording career in 1998 through a prominent association with Sony Classical. Already a chart-topper in Greece, he reached global listeners in 2002 via the album Sometimes I Dream, which blended rock, pop, film music, and operatic elements.
