Biography
Since the 1990s the baritone Bryn Terfel has ranked among the most cherished vocalists worldwide. His career has extended far beyond opera to encompass distinguished performances and recordings of art song, popular repertoire, and Welsh-language material.
Born Bryn Terfel Jones on November 9, 1965, in Pant Glas, Wales, he was raised by a farming father and spoke Welsh from childhood. Early participation in singing contests gave him substantial stage experience, so that he arrived at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama already a seasoned performer. To avoid confusion with the singer Delme Bryn-Jones, he began using his middle name. Two major prizes won at Guildhall led to a decisive breakthrough when he took first place at the 1989 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, an event broadcast widely and noticed by leading conductors including Sir Georg Solti. The following year he made his operatic debut with the Welsh National Opera as Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan tutte. Specializing in roles such as Figaro in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, he received the Young Singer of the Year award from Britain’s Gramophone magazine. In 1994 Terfel signed with Deutsche Grammophon and issued the Schubert recital An die Musik. He soon proved extraordinarily productive, releasing six albums during 2000 alone. Named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2003, he had already been serving as honorary monarch of the Welsh island of Bardsey.
Terfel has remained largely with Deutsche Grammophon while appearing on smaller labels such as Marquis for several Welsh-language projects and has voiced strong support for Welsh language and culture. Crossover releases, among them Homeward Bound, a collection of American hymnody recorded with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, have enjoyed strong sales. In 2018 he issued Dreams and Songs, which mingled musical-theater numbers, Welsh songs, and other popular selections. Onstage he has continued to sing opera, embracing Wagnerian parts such as Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger as his voice matured. In 2016 he performed the title role of Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov at the Royal Opera House. His operatic repertoire comprises roughly thirty works, with Wagner, Mozart, and Puccini the most frequent composers represented. He has also performed oratorio with notable commitment—Mendelssohn’s Elijah among his specialties—and has remained an active interpreter of classical art song. With the release of Sea Songs on Deutsche Grammophon in 2024, his recorded catalog exceeded fifty titles. In 2023 he sang a Welsh-language work by Paul Mealor at the coronation of King Charles III.
