Gerald Finley, celebrated for his command of the leading Mozart baritone parts, has also drawn extensive admiration for originating demanding contemporary roles that include J. Robert Oppenheimer in Adams' Doctor Atomic, Harry Heegan in Turnage's The Silver Tassie, and the central figure in Picker's Fantastic Mr. Fox. No area of the standard repertoire appears absent from his grasp; he has taken the title part in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, portrayed Marcello in Puccini's La bohème, and assumed numerous other characters drawn from operas composed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His concert and recital programs have likewise ranged widely across works by Handel, Schubert, Schumann, Duparc, Ives, Britten, Maxwell-Davies, and further composers. Engagements at the foremost opera houses and concert halls worldwide have defined his schedule. It follows naturally that Finley, whose voice is customarily identified as bass-baritone, has issued numerous recordings on a variety of labels.

Born in Montreal, Canada, on January 30, 1960, Finley first sang as a chorister at St. Matthew's Church in Ottawa and subsequently joined several additional choirs active in the Ottawa vicinity. He began the music curriculum at the University of Ottawa yet soon transferred to England, continuing his training at Cambridge University (King's College) and the Royal College of Music in London. Initial professional work encompassed membership in the Cambridge Singers and, between 1986 and 1988, affiliation with Glyndebourne Opera. Roger Norrington engaged him as Papageno for a 1989 staging of Die Zauberflöte; the following year Finley toured the same role with the Glyndebourne company. His career thereafter advanced rapidly, marked by important debuts at leading houses, among them his 1998 appearance as Papageno at the Met. Alongside these successes he accepted artistic risks, taking the role of Jaufré Rudel in the 2000 Salzburg Festival premiere of Kaija Saariaho's L'amour de loin. Among his most noted recordings stands Songs by Samuel Barber on Hyperion, honored with the Classic FM Gramophone Award for Best Solo Vocal Recording in 2008.

As his voice matured in middle age, Finley extended his repertoire into Tchaikovsky, performing Eugene Onegin at Covent Garden in 2008, into Wagner, appearing as Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger at Glyndebourne Opera in 2011, and into Verdi, singing Falstaff with the Canadian Opera Company in 2014-2015. In 2015 he gave the first performance of Saariaho's True Fire, a score written expressly for him. His recorded output likewise broadened, encompassing an album of Shostakovich songs issued in 2014 and, the year after, a disc of Einojuhani Rautavaara works in which he appeared as soloist. Finley released Sibelius: In the Stream of Life in 2016, presenting mainly Sibelius songs arranged for baritone and orchestra. He has maintained his association with Hyperion while also recording for the Ondine and Chandos labels. In 2020 he took part in a London Symphony recording of Janácek's The Cunning Little Vixen under Simon Rattle and in a Finnish Radio Symphony album of Peter Lieberson songs conducted by Hannu Lintu.

Finley received appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2014 and as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2017.
