Biography
Just two years after completing her training at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia, soprano Marina Rebeka delivered a breakthrough performance that opened doors to appearances on the foremost opera stages worldwide. She had launched her musical education in her native Latvia before pursuing further studies in Rome and finishing her formal training in 2007. That same year marked her professional debut, when she portrayed Contessa di Folleville and Madama Cortese in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims. International notice arrived in 2008 after she performed Britten’s War Requiem with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Critical acclaim followed at the 2009 Salzburg Festival, where, under Riccardo Muti’s direction in Rossini’s Moïse et Pharaon, she took the role of Anaï. Subsequent debuts came at La Scala in Il viaggio a Reims, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin under Roberto Abbado in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in Verdi’s La Traviata, and in Valencia under Zubin Mehta in Bizet’s Carmen; 2011 brought engagements at both the Metropolitan Opera in Don Giovanni and Carnegie Hall in Moïse et Pharaon. Opera-house debuts continued through the following seasons, alongside recital engagements and festival appearances. In 2012 she returned to the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia for Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle conducted by Antonio Pappano. The EMI recording of that performance, issued in 2013, became her first released album, followed only months later by her debut solo recital disc, Mozart: Arias, also on EMI. Listeners and reviewers alike have responded to both the distinctive qualities of her voice and the depth of her characterizations.
