Italian vocalist Alessandro Safina emerged during the opening years of the twenty-first century, forging a singular sound by merging his operatic foundation with contemporary pop. He entered the world in Siena, Italy, in 1968 and developed an early passion for opera, appearing in European productions of Puccini’s La Boheme and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Only toward the end of his teenage years did he cultivate an appreciation for pop and rock, finding particular influence in Genesis, the Clash, Simple Minds, and U2, after which he began fusing the two traditions. During the 1990s, acclaimed Italian pianist and composer Romano Musumarra discovered him, prompting the pair to enter the studio in pursuit of Safina’s vision for a “soulful new pop opera music.” Their collaboration yielded his self-titled debut album, released in September 2001 on Interscope in the United States. Subsequent releases—2002’s Insieme a Te, 2003’s Musica di Te, and 2007’s Sognami—further distilled that artistic approach.
