Emerging briefly from Fairport Convention, Fotheringay revolved around Sandy Denny, the ensemble’s central figure and guiding force. Their lone studio album appeared in 1970 as a self-titled collection that mixed Denny’s original material with several cover interpretations. Although the group sketched out plans for a second album that remained unfinished at the time, guitarist Jerry Donahue later assembled the existing recordings and issued the completed set in 2008 as Fotheringay 2. Even though the band’s output possessed an intriguing and captivating quality, Fotheringay dissolved in 1971, freeing Denny to begin a solo career. She also supplied duet vocals with Robert Plant on Led Zeppelin’s “Battle of Evermore,” becoming the only guest singer ever to appear on any of the band’s albums.
