Biography
Frank Vignola stands out among jazz guitarists for his technical precision and adaptability across a broad spectrum of styles, encompassing fusion alongside mainstream pop-jazz as well as hard bop, post-bop, and swing traditions both gypsy and otherwise. The New York native draws from an expansive range of sources, with Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Pat Metheny, Django Reinhardt, and Charlie Christian each shaping aspects of his approach at various stages. His emergence as a bandleader came via the 1993 release Appel Direct, featuring sidemen such as Junior Mance and Billy Mitchell; the recording earned strong critical praise and drew notice from many fellow musicians. A tireless performer, he maintains an average of more than 200 engagements annually, whether leading his own groups or supporting figures like Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen, Wynton Marsalis, and Tommy Emmanuel. Without a Doubt, issued in 2000, earned recognition as a post-bop landmark thanks to contributions from jazz flute great Frank Wess, bassist Mark Egan, and longtime drummer Joe Ascione. Among his most celebrated works are collaborative and tribute projects such as Meeting of the Grooves with Gene Bertoncini, 2006’s Vignola Plays Gershwin, and Just Between Frets alongside Emmanuel, plus the widely recognized 100 Years of Django, which appeared the same year he launched an exploration of American roots and swing alongside Mark O’Connor and Chris Thile on Jam Session. Throughout the 2000s Vignola maintained a steady presence on NPR and public television.
Raised in the New York region after his December 30, 1965 birth in suburban Long Island, the Italian-American musician took up the guitar at age five and developed admiration for numerous players. Never limiting himself to jazz alone, Vignola absorbed rock, R&B, and pop with equal enthusiasm, extending his regard to icons such as Eric Clapton and Eddie Van Halen. As a young adult he trained at the Cultural Arts Center of Long Island and secured numerous sideman opportunities during the 1980s. At age 27 he signed with Concord Jazz and captured his debut session as a leader, the 1993 album Appel Direct; further Concord titles followed, among them 1993’s Let It Happen, 1996’s Look Right, Jog Left, and 1999’s Déjà Vu. He subsequently joined Nagel Heyer for 2000’s Off Broadway, then issued two Django Reinhardt-inflected recordings that drew favorable attention: 2001’s Blues for a Gypsy and 2003’s Gypsy Soul. In 2007 he revisited composer George Gershwin on Vignola Plays Gershwin, and he returned to Reinhardt’s legacy with 2010’s 100 Years of Django. Later pairings with guitarist Vinny Raniolo produced the classical-oriented Melody Magic in 2013 and the straight-ahead Swing Zing! in 2015. The 2017 collaboration with mandolinist David Grisman yielded the bluegrass- and gypsy jazz-infused Frank ’N’ Dawg, while Acoustic Disc brought out First Time Together! with Martin Taylor and Grisman in 2019, an album previously circulated only as a 2012 private CD-R.
