A pioneering force on the mandolin, Frank Wakefield delivered straight-ahead bluegrass alongside such established acts as Red Allen and the Greenbriar Boys. He entered a musical household in Emory Gap, Tennessee, and by his eighth birthday had already become proficient on harmonica, guitar, and bass. When his family relocated to Dayton, Ohio, in 1950, he soon adopted the mandolin and launched the gospel-focused Wakefield Brothers alongside his brother Ralph on guitar. The siblings made their radio debut in Dayton the following year. After the pair disbanded, Wakefield joined Red Allen in 1952 to create Red Allen & Frank Wakefield & the Kentuckians; the two remained collaborators until 1972 while occasionally exploring separate endeavors. During that association Wakefield acquired fluency on banjo and Dobro, and after accompanying Allen to Washington, D.C., in 1960 he began giving private mandolin instruction, counting a young David Grisman among his foremost students. In 1965 he entered the Greenbriar Boys, staying with the group until 1970. He issued The Frank Wakefield Band in 1971 and, three years later, recorded Pistol Packin' Mama with the Good Old Boys, a session that included Don Reno, Dave Nelson, and Chubby Wise under the production of Jerry Garcia. Wakefield maintained his teaching practice, issuing an instructional video, and continued recording well into the new century, placing Midnight on the Mandolin (2000), Don't Lie to Me (2003), and Ownself Blues (2009) with the Patuxent label. He passed away on April 26, 2024, at the age of 89.
