Biography
Tim Stafford has built a multifaceted career spanning guitar performance, songwriting, production, authorship, and instruction. Formerly affiliated with Alison Krauss & Union Station, he also helped establish the contemporary bluegrass ensemble Blue Highway, an award-winning group. His flat-picking expertise has positioned him as a sought-after session musician across many years, while numerous bluegrass and country figures have interpreted his compositions. Stafford issued his first solo recording, Endless Line, in 2004 and has since produced additional solo projects along with collaborative efforts such as the 2023 release Lost Voices alongside Thomm Jutz. Beyond recordings, he partnered on the 2010 book Still Inside: The Tony Rice Story. Stafford has delivered music instruction at higher-education institutions and served on faculty at all prominent bluegrass-focused camps.
Raised in Kingsport, Tennessee, Stafford developed a deep interest in bluegrass during the mid-'70s that shaped his path forward. He began with banjo before shifting focus to guitar toward the close of that decade, refining his technique through regional outfits including Mountain Memories and the Boys in the Band. In the late '80s he joined Adam Steffey, Tammy Rogers, Brian Fesler, and Barry Bales to form Dusty Miller. Between 1990 and 1992, Stafford, Steffey, and Bales joined Alison Krauss & Union Station, sharing in the ensemble's 1992 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album with Every Time You Say Goodbye. Stafford became a founding member of Blue Highway in 1994; the ensemble launched a sequence of well-regarded albums with 1995's It's a Long, Long Road. The enduring band has accumulated multiple honors, among them the Best Bluegrass Album Grammy for 2016's Original Traditional. Stafford remains a widely sought session player, appearing on projects by Willie Nelson, Kenny Chesney, and Jorma Kaukonen, among numerous others, while his original material has been recorded by Ronnie Bowman, Jim Hurst, Mountain Heart, Claire Lynch, Scottie Sparks, and Dan Tyminski.
