Biography
Known for their lighthearted approach amid the British Invasion, Freddie & the Dreamers delivered pop songs with an emphasis on humor at a time when most contemporaries treated the genre with utmost gravity. Frontman Freddie Garrity first performed in skiffle ensembles during the closing years of the 1950s, then moved into rock & roll by the start of the 1960s. Once the Beatles opened the American market, the group joined the surge of British acts hoping to match the Fab Four’s extraordinary commercial breakthrough. Success on the charts proved far more plentiful in the U.K. than stateside, where the band registered just a single top-ten entry—the number-one single “I’m Telling You Now.” By the shift from 1965 into 1966, U.S. chart action had ceased and British hits likewise tapered off, prompting the original lineup to dissolve in 1968. Garrity subsequently recruited fresh members for new iterations of the Dreamers, sustaining live performances across two decades until his health deteriorated and he suffered a severe episode aboard a flight from New York to Britain in 2001, widely linked to emphysema. Frequently restricted to a wheelchair thereafter, he passed away in Bangor, Wales, on May 19, 2006, at age 69.
