Born in Germany, the Romantic composer Pacius cultivated a Finnish musical outlook and perspective. Spohr guided his violin training, while Hauptmann oversaw his studies in composition. A post in Stockholm’s court orchestra paved the way for his later move to Helsinki, where he began as a university music lecturer, rose to professor in 1860, and received an honorary doctorate in 1877. This German-born musician earned recognition as the father of Finnish music largely through his setting of Runeberg’s poem “Vart land,” which became the national anthem. Finnish folk traditions, together with the idioms of Mendelssohn and Spohr, informed his creative work. His operas comprise “Kung Karls jaky” and “Loreley,” while cantatas, a symphony, a violin concerto, and numerous orchestral pieces and songs complete his catalog.
