Biography
Philip Bailey, the vocalist from the 1970s supergroup Earth, Wind & Fire, handled production duties for the vocal ensemble Free Life, whose Epic release "Wish You Were Here" entered the charts. Written by Bailey himself, the ballad reached number 91 on the R&B list during the first months of 1979. Both that single and the accompanying Free Life album reflected the stylistic imprint of EWF. Although Free Life issued a follow-up single titled "Stomp and Shout" and a non-album track called "Dance Fantasy," neither managed to chart. Carl Carlwell, one of the group's members, subsequently joined the 1990s outfit 101 North, whose track "So Easy" appeared on two albums produced by George Duke for Capitol—101 North in 1987 and Forever Yours in 1991. Carlwell was also the brother of Minneapolis vocalist Sue Ann Carwell, known for her song "Let Me Let You Rock Me."
