Bill Gaither, a prominent figure in Christian music, established the Gaither Vocal Band during the initial years of the 1980s, positioning it among the foremost southern gospel vocal ensembles in the United States. Throughout its existence Gaither has remained the sole founding participant, while numerous respected CCM and gospel vocalists have contributed to the lineup over time, among them Russ Taff, Guy Penrod, Wes Hampton, Michael English, Mark Lowry, and David Phelps. The group’s spiritually uplifting songs have built a devoted audience across the decades, with standout studio releases such as Homecoming in 1991, Lovin’ Life in 2009, and That’s Gospel, Brother in 2021 collectively earning multiple Dove and Grammy Awards.
In 1981 the ensemble was assembled by Bill Gaither, widely recognized as a contemporary gospel legend, together with Gary McSpadden, Lee Young, and Steve Green. Their recordings appeared on the Star Song, Benson, and Chordant labels and accumulated numerous honors. Among the projects issued were two volumes of Southern Classics along with 20 Inspirational Favorites, the live album Back Home in Indiana, and God Is Good in 1999. David Phelps had already joined by that point, and I Do Believe arrived in fall 2000. Mark Lowry departed in 2002 and was succeeded by Russ Taff, the same year Everything Good was released, followed by A Cappella in 2003, Give It Away in 2006, Lovin’ Life in 2008, Reunited in 2009, and both Better Day and Greatly Blessed in 2010. Anchored by Wes Hampton, who entered the group in 2005, the band has stayed active with regular touring and additional albums including the Dove Award-winning Pure and Simple in 2013, Sometimes It Takes a Mountain in 2014, and the Grammy-nominated Hymns in 2015.
Better Together appeared in 2016 and received a Grammy nomination for Best Roots Gospel Album. David Phelps left the ensemble in 2017, after which new tenor Reggie Smith made his debut on We Have This Moment, released that October. The studio album Good Things Take Time followed in 2019 and featured gospel classics such as “Child of the King” and “Revive Us Again” together with several new originals. A Southern Gospel Recorded Song of the Year Dove Award went to “My Feet Are on the Rock” from That’s Gospel, Brother in 2021. Later that year All Heaven and Nature Sing was issued, while Let’s Just Praise the Lord arrived in 2022. Two further Homecoming series recordings, Power in the Blood and Hallelujah Homecoming, appeared the following year.
