Biography
Houston's Galactic Cowboys fuse art-rock, thrash, progressive metal, and Beatlesque pop into a distinctive heavy-metal amalgam. The group surfaced during the early 1990s and came close to mainstream acceptance in tandem with longtime associates King's X, whose members likewise merged sonic experimentation and understated Christian motifs. Their self-titled 1991 debut along with later releases such as Space in Your Face (1993) and At the End of the Day (1998) drew critical praise yet never achieved wide commercial success, prompting the ensemble to disband in 2000. Galactic Cowboys reunited in 2017, signed with Mascot Label Group, and issued their seventh full-length album, Long Way Back to the Moon.
Bassist Monty Colvin and drummer Alan Doss initially collaborated in Houston as members of the Awful Truth. After that outfit dissolved, Colvin and Doss enlisted vocalist Ben Huggins and guitarist Dane Sonnier to establish Galactic Cowboys. Shortly thereafter DGC signed the quartet, which delivered its self-titled debut in 1991 followed by Space in Your Face two years later. Both albums resonated with progressive-minded listeners, yet the rise of grunge further distanced the band from broader audiences. After Space in Your Face appeared, DGC dropped the group, Wally Farkas took Sonnier's place, and Sonnier launched the Sonnier Brothers Band. Late in 1995 Galactic Cowboys secured a contract with Metal Blade and delivered their first album for the label, Machine Fish, in January 1996. Several months afterward they issued the Feel the Rage EP, then followed with The Horse That Bud Bought in 1997. The well-received At the End of the Day arrived in 1998; two years later Galactic Cowboys resurfaced with Let It Go, after which seventeen years elapsed before the band reentered the studio.
Throughout the hiatus every member remained musically engaged and occasionally convened for isolated performances. In 2016 Galactic Cowboys disclosed their new agreement with the Dutch progressive imprint Mascot, and the next year the long-awaited seventh studio album Long Way Back to the Moon was released.
