Although the moniker Garcia Peoples, attached to this New Jersey cosmic indie jam outfit, carries no deliberate nod to any one individual, the group has plainly absorbed lessons from Jerry Garcia and his collaborators’ more exploratory recordings. From the closing years of the 2010s onward, the musicians drew upon a lineage of classic, lysergic-tinged explorers—among them the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers, and Canned Heat—while also folding in the idiosyncratic approach of less-celebrated units such as NRBQ, thereby crafting their own refreshed vision of psychedelic expanse. Known for embracing frequent guest appearances and an accelerated pace of capturing fresh material, the band issues both concert documents and studio efforts, among them the 2022 release Dodging Dues, at a remarkably steady rate.

The ensemble came together in Rutherford, New Jersey, its founding lineup comprising guitarists and vocalists Tom Malach and Danny Arakaki, drummer Cesar Arakaki, and bassist Derek Spaldo. Early on, the quartet cultivated a sound shaped by both celebrated and lesser-known jam bands of the 1960s and 1970s. Regular appearances throughout Brooklyn’s club circuit allowed them to link up with kindred spirits and cultivate a following for their high-voltage performances, which routinely expanded into long-form psychedelic explorations. In 2017 keyboardist P.G. Six—likewise a participant in the comparably free-spirited Wet Tuna—joined the ranks, and work began on a debut full-length that surfaced as Cosmic Cash, issued in summer 2018 via the Beyond Beyond Is Beyond imprint. Less than twelve months later, in March 2019, the follow-up album Natural Facts appeared. Maintaining their momentum, the musicians maintained an intensive touring schedule while sustaining their steady output with the October 2019 arrival of One Step Behind, which included a guest contribution from Tom Malach’s father, saxophonist Bob Malach, whose session credits range from Miles Davis to Madonna. One Step Behind also marked the first recording to feature incoming bassist Andy Cush and keyboardist Pat Gubler, with Spaldo adopting a broader multi-instrumental position and expanding the group to six members.

This revised configuration moved into 2020 accompanied by several live offerings, among them the cassette-only 10-10-19 Live at Nublu NYC and Peoples Motel Band, which captured a shared stage venture with Philadelphia guitar veteran Chris Forsyth. October 2020 brought the fourth studio album, Nightcap at Wit's End, whose approach favored concise, carefully wrought compositions—twelve tracks in total—over the extended improvisations typical of their concerts and prior release. The fifth studio album, Dodging Dues, followed in January 2022. Produced by Matt Sweeney, the set further broadened the band’s palette by incorporating songwriting and lead-vocal turns from the newer members Cush and Gubler.
