Shannon Lay first gained notice as a singer, guitarist, and songwriter within the California garage punk community before shifting direction to craft a solo body of work rooted in introspective, psychedelic-tinged indie folk. Her songwriting blends impressionistic lyrics with elegant melodies that evoke British and Celtic folk traditions, while her acoustic playing and singing deliver strong emotional force without sacrificing refined restraint. The garage-rooted contributions she made with Feels appear most clearly on the band’s self-titled 2016 debut, whereas her own breakthrough arrived with the 2017 release Living Water; after joining Sub Pop Records she recorded two expansive, carefully shaped full-length projects, August in 2019 and Geist in 2021.

Born in Redondo Beach, California, in 1991, Lay devoted herself to skateboarding before acquiring a guitar at age thirteen and teaching herself to play. Early practice centered on classic-rock numbers by Neil Young and the Beatles, yet exposure to X and the Velvet Underground quickly widened her listening habits and prompted a search for fresh styles. At seventeen she relocated from Redondo Beach to Los Angeles with the goal of entering a band; a Craigslist notice connected her with Facts on File, but a subsequent job at a vintage clothing store introduced her to co-worker Laena Geronimo, already active in Raw Geronimo. Lay joined that ensemble, which became Feels in 2014 and began attracting attention on the California garage punk circuit. While still with the group she pursued solo work, issuing the sixteen-track home-recorded collection Holy Heartache in 2015—an effort she later characterized as “just me putting songs on Bandcamp … it never felt like an official release.” A more rewarding experience followed in 2016 when Feels issued their self-titled debut, produced by Ty Segall. Early in 2017 she released the folk-focused All This Life Goin’ Down, which drew favorable notices, then followed it in September with Living Water; impressed by the record, singer-songwriter Kevin Morby established Mare Records expressly to put it out. Success with Living Water allowed Lay to quit her day job and concentrate on writing and recording. February 2019 brought Feels’ second album, Post Earth, and August of the same year saw the arrival of her own August on Sub Pop, the veteran Seattle indie imprint. Before year’s end she contributed a single to the label’s Singles Club series, and in 2020 she teamed with singer-guitarist Steve Gunn for a cover of Blaze Foley’s “Clay Pigeons” benefiting Minnesota’s Black Visions Collective. Additional activities included touring with Ty Segall’s Freedom Band and supplying vocals to the track “Ice Plant,” first heard in 2019 and later included on his album First Taste. In October 2021 Sub Pop released Geist, Lay’s second album for the label, a spectral set featuring instrumental support from Ben Boye, Sofia Arreguin, and Aaron Otheim along with her periodic collaborator Segall.
