Biography
Sun June originated in the late 2010s as an offshoot project among filmmakers based in Austin, Texas, evoking gentle, haze-veiled echoes. The ensemble introduced its restrained, country-tinged indie rock with the 2018 release Years. A follow-up full-length, Somewhere, arrived in 2021 and featured richer instrumental layers. While the musicians resided across separate regions, they completed their third album, Bad Dream Jaguar, which surfaced in 2023 and displayed a more variable character than earlier work.
Fresh out of Northeastern universities, vocalist Laura Colwell and guitarist Stephen Salisbury connected in Austin while serving on the editorial team for Terrence Malick’s Song to Song. Drawn to the city’s active music community and the ready availability of instruments, they assembled Sun June alongside lead guitarist Michael Bain, bassist Justin Harris, and drummer Sarah Schultz. The group captured its atmospheric first album live to tape alongside co-producer Evan Kasper, issuing the dusky set Years via Keeled Scales in 2018. The following year brought Younger, an EP compiling unreleased versions and B-sides from the Years sessions.
For the second album the band worked with producer Danny Reisch, who incorporated subtle synthesizer and percussion elements amid expanded group arrangements that featured Colwell playing guitar for the initial time. Somewhere appeared in early 2021 through a joint release on Keeled Scales and Run for Cover Records. Subsequently the lineup experienced change when Salisbury relocated to North Carolina, which modified the group dynamic through geographic separation. Colwell and Salisbury maintained their songwriting partnership remotely before scheduling sessions with producer and engineer Dan Duszynski in Raleigh. The resulting record, Bad Dream Jaguar, emerged in October 2023 with an expansive, introspective atmosphere occasionally colored by tension.
