The Gargoyles came together in San Francisco, California, during 1989, drawing on their shared enthusiasm for the unpolished 1970s style exemplified by The Dead Boys, The Stooges, and Jeff Dahl. The original lineup featured Doug Heeschen on guitar, Julia Altstatt on bass, Lisa Lombardo on guitar, Tim Storm handling vocals, and Brian Tyranny behind the drums. An additional spark from Russ Meyer and Roger Corman films propelled the group forward, resulting in multiple seven-inch releases issued from 1990 through 1991. Shaken Street Records then issued the band’s debut mini-LP, Down on You, in 1991, which was succeeded by the full-length Without End the following year. In 1993, Neil Smith, Alison Victor, and Tony Palmer stepped in on guitar, guitar, and bass respectively to replace the departing Heeschen, Altstatt, and Lombardo, just ahead of the 1994 Inflexible mini-album. The following year, co-founder and frontman Tim Storm moved to Austin, Texas, bringing the band’s six-year run to a close.
