Biography
The Pomona, California outfit Geggy Tah has always stood apart from conventional acts. Its sound shifts restlessly across funk, jazz, alternative, and experimental rock in ways that resist easy categorization. What began as a duo of Greg Kurstin and Tommy Jordan acquired its name from the way their younger sisters mangled the pronunciation of those names. In the early ’90s the pair signed with David Byrne’s Luaka Bop imprint and issued their first full-length, Grand Opening, in 1994, listing Byrne himself among the executive producers. Though commercial success remained elusive, the album drew unanimous approval from critics, momentum that carried into the follow-up, Sacred Cow, two years afterward. By then the lineup had grown to a trio with the arrival of drummer Daren Hahn, and the songs continued their eclectic sprawl while achieving stronger results. The entire record was tracked at home, with Susan Rodgers returning to handle production and engineering duties she had first performed on the debut. Six years after that release, Geggy Tah delivered another densely textured work, Into the Oh, which appeared on Virgin in June.
