Biography
Morphine stood apart as a blues-infused, stripped-down rock & roll trio that operated entirely without guitars. In place of conventional riffs, the group built its sound on gliding two-string bass lines, aggressive saxophone work, and Mark Sandman’s dry, detached vocal style. Throughout the middle of the 1990s the band cultivated a devoted American following largely through grassroots recommendations, consistent college-radio rotation, and strong notices in the alternative press.
Bassist and singer Mark Sandman, fresh from the blues-leaning alternative outfit Treat Her Right, launched the project in 1989 alongside saxophonist Dana Colley, previously of the Boston band Three Colors. Drummer Jerome Dupree completed the initial lineup. Their first album, Good, appeared on the independent Accurate/Distortion label in 1991 and was licensed for reissue by Rykodisc the following year. Substantial college airplay and favorable coverage in regional alternative outlets greeted the record. After its release Dupree departed; Billy Conway, another former Treat Her Right colleague, took over the drum chair.
The critical response to Good paved the way for the 1993 release Cure for Pain, which drew praise from both music and mainstream outlets. An extensive tour of the United States and Europe kept the band on the road through 1994 and drove independent sales past the 300,000 mark. In 1995 Morphine issued its third album, Yes, which again earned positive notices and helped maintain the group’s sizable underground audience.
Commercial traction on Cure for Pain and Yes prompted major-label interest; late in 1996 Dreamworks acquired the bulk of the band’s contract from Rykodisc. The resulting Dreamworks debut, Like Swimming, arrived in spring 1997 to generally approving reviews yet left the trio still confined to cult status. On 3 July 1999 Sandman suffered a fatal heart attack at age 46 while performing onstage in Rome. The Night was released posthumously in early 2000, followed by the live collection Bootleg Detroit that autumn.
