Although Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli crossed paths at a 1989 gathering, their musical partnership and personal friendship did not develop until the next decade. By then each had already established a prominent presence through earlier work, Lanegan as a member of the Screaming Trees and Dulli with the Afghan Whigs. Shared histories of personal difficulty strengthened their connection, which was further reinforced by overlapping musical sensibilities. Lanegan contributed to the Twilight Singers’ 2003 release Blackberry Belle, while Dulli appeared on Lanegan’s 2004 album Bubblegum and joined his live band on piano. Around the same period Lanegan mentioned in an interview that the two were working together, a disclosure made without Dulli’s prior knowledge. Their initial studio session occurred at the close of 2003, yet competing commitments delayed further progress: Dulli remained active with the Twilight Singers and the Italian group Afterhours, and Lanegan balanced his solo recordings with duties alongside Queens of the Stone Age plus projects involving Soulsavers and Isobel Campbell of Belle & Sebastian. The Gutter Twins did not perform together publicly until September 2005, when they appeared in Rome. Two Lanegan collaborations surfaced the following year on the Twilight Singers’ EP A Stitch in Time, by which point he had become a de facto participant in their touring lineup. After signing with Sub Pop, the duo issued their first full-length album, Saturnalia, in March 2008.
