Rich Machin and Ian Glover, operating as producers and remixers, launched the British electronica duo Soulsavers, whose downtempo style incorporates rock, gospel, and country influences. Several favorably received 7" EPs preceded the release of their debut album, Tough Guys Don't Dance, in 2003. Their follow-up full-length, It's Not How Far You Fall, It's the Way You Land, surfaced in 2007. That release attracted notice in the specialist press, largely because of Mark Lanegan's featured vocals and a guest spot by Will Oldham. Lanegan and Oldham rejoined for the 2009 album Broken, which also included vocal contributions from Jason Pierce, Mike Patton, and Gibby Haynes. Three years after that, Depeche Mode's vocalist Dave Gahan partnered with the duo on The Light the Dead See. Late in 2015 the pair issued a second project with Gahan, Angels & Ghosts, together with Kubrick, their instrumental homage to the emotions, atmospherics, and characters from the films of the titular iconic director. Shortly afterward Soulsavers entered a hiatus. They resurfaced in 2021 with Dave Gahan for a third collaboration, the covers album Imposter, which presented Gahan's interpretations of songs by artists including Neil Young, Cat Power, and PJ Harvey.
