The Black Ryder emerged in 2007 with a dark, sultry take on shoegaze once vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Aimee Nash and Scott Von Ryper exited the Morning After Girls. The Sydney, Australia natives drew on contributions from musicians tied to Brian Jonestown Massacre, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Swervedriver, and the Church for their 2009 debut full-length, Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride. The album earned broad critical favor, landing on Rolling Stone Australia's list of 50 Best Albums of the Year while its songs landed placements in series such as House and Damages. Nash also joined Black Rebel Motorcycle Club for the track "Done All Wrong," which surfaced on the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack. Mexican Summer issued Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride stateside in 2010 as Von Ryper and Nash settled in Los Angeles and turned to its successor. Self-producing the still more expansive The Door Behind the Door in 2015, the pair released it on their Anti-Machine Machine label.
