Biography
Before traveling to Italy in the 1680s, Muffat held posts as an organist and court musician in Vienna, Prague, and Salzburg. While in Rome he took lessons from Pasquini, attended performances of Corelli’s concerti grossi, and heard his own pieces presented at Corelli’s residence. Returning to Salzburg in 1682, he grew dissatisfied with conditions there and accepted the post of Kapellmeister at the court of the Bishop of Passau. A versatile musician, he helped bring French and Italian styles into the German musical world.
