Giacomo Antonio Perti received counterpoint instruction from Franceschini and harpsichord training from Laurenti, while Rossi, Carissimi, Cesti, and Corso shaped his compositional approach during his Parma period. He took up the post of choir master at Bologna cathedral in 1690 yet maintained concurrent responsibilities at S Petronio, at S Domenico beginning in 1704, and at S Maria in Galliera beginning in 1706. The Accademia Filharmonica selected him as director on five separate occasions, and his pedagogical reach proved substantial through pupils such as Torelli and Martini.

A prolific creator across many forms, Perti produced roughly twenty operas, more than three hundred sacred works, twenty oratorios, and numerous masses, psalms, motets, secular cantatas, and instrumental pieces intended for church use. Melodic invention, structural variety, and colorful instrumentation mark his style. Festive orchestration, especially felicitous strings and trumpets, dominates most scores, which display lucid command of craft, elastic adaptability, and a consistent interest in dialogues among instruments as well as between instruments and voices.
