Gil Rose, a conductor deeply committed to championing contemporary music with a focus on American creators and a particular emphasis on innovative operatic works, gained prominence primarily through establishing the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. Born during October 1964 in Pittsburgh, he pursued his education at both the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Carnegie Mellon University. In 1996 he established the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, an ensemble devoted to the commissioning, presentation, and documentation of fresh compositions, which operates from Jordan Hall in Boston. This orchestra has commissioned in excess of 20 pieces and delivered the global debuts of more than 75. Following the production of almost thirty-six recordings on external imprints, the group launched its proprietary label, BMOP/sound, during 2008, with Rose acting as executive director. Additionally, he has led performances with the Netherlands Radio Symphony, the American Composers Orchestra, and the Cleveland Chamber Symphony. Between 2003 and 2012 Rose held the position of artistic director at Opera Boston, an organization presenting both canonical works and modern creations. In collaboration with this company and the Opera Unlimited Festival he directed the initial performances of Zhou Long’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Madame White Snake, Elena Ruehr’s Toussaint Before the Spirits, and the American debut of Peter Eötvös’ Angels in America, together with area first stagings of Adès’ Powder Her Face, Harbison’s Full Moon in March, and Hindemith’s Cardillac. During 2013 he created Odyssey Opera, an entity centered on mounting infrequently staged and original operas. Rose earned multiple Grammy nominations for his recordings alongside the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, culminating in the 2020 triumph for Best Opera Recording with Tobias Picker: Fantastic Mr. Fox. He has overseen the first recordings of compositions by numerous leading international composers across diverse genres, such as Louis Andriessen, William Bolcom, and Lukas Foss. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic Rose stayed productive, producing three complete opera albums with BMOP featuring Norman Dello Joio's The Trial at Rouen, Samuel Barber's Medea, and Anthony Davis' X - The Life and Times of Malcolm X. The year 2022 brought forth the issues of Gail Kubik: Symphony Concertante and John Corigliano: To Music conducted by him. At that point his discography included over 75 releases.
