Biography
Although widely celebrated for his prowess as a tap dancer in particular along with his performances on stage and screen, Gregory Hines also displayed notable ability as a vocalist. Following a guest appearance the year prior on Luther Vandross' Give Me the Reason, his self-titled album surfaced in 1987. While this remained his lone mainstream musical effort, it was neither his first nor his final recording. Cast albums drawn from multiple Broadway successes, among them Eubie! (1975), Sophisticated Lady (1981), and Jelly's Last Jam (1992), highlight his vocal contributions to strong effect. In 1997 he headlined the television series The Gregory Hines Show and took on a recurring part in Will and Grace. Hines died on August 9, 2003, following a struggle with cancer.
