Biography
Halcali emerged under production from Rip Slyme members as the initial Japanese hip-hop act to register strong domestic chart placement, owing to an approach that leaned heavily into pop conventions through infectious hooks, breezy atmospheres, and playful verses laced with English nonsense phrases. The pair consists of lifelong companions Halca (Haruka) and Yucali (Yukari), whose given names fused to form the group moniker. These Tokyo natives had been acquainted since grade school and shared the same dance instruction; upon reaching secondary education they auditioned successfully as prospective female rappers for Fumiya and Ryo-Z of Rip Slyme, operating collectively as Oshare Track Factory. Halca and Yucali secured the spot, adopted the Halcali identity, and first performed their opening single “Tandem” onstage at Rip Slyme’s 2002 Budokan show before ten thousand spectators. Issued in 2003, the track climbed to position nineteen, served as the theme for the anime series Mr. Stain, and aired on Latin American MTV. Their opening full-length, Halcali Bacon (2003), reached number five and thereby became the earliest album by Japanese female hip-hop artists to enter the Top Ten.
Although that peak stood as their highest placement, the duo sustained a consistent trajectory thereafter, their output shifting between J-pop and bubblegum rap frameworks. The follow-up album Ongaku No Susume appeared in 2004; a remix collection and the single “Tip Taps Tip” followed in 2005, the latter supplying the theme song for the popular Eureka Seven anime beginning in 2006. Three additional singles issued between 2006 and 2008 likewise accompanied anime productions, among them “Long Kiss Good Bye” (2008), chosen for Naruto Shippuden. In 2007 Halcali issued Cyborg Oretachi, which included contributions from Fantastic Plastic Machine, Polysics, and Oshare Track Factory along with the members’ initial songwriting efforts. The record reflected an attempt at greater lyrical and musical maturity, incorporating rock and electrocore textures, and received a presentation in France that same year. Halcali resumed European dates in 2008 while making their live debut in the United States.
